Victor LAGYE (1825 - Ghent - 1896 - Antwerp)
Painter of historical subjects, architectural buildings, and genre-scenery. He was a pupil of Th. Canneel at the Academy of Ghent. He won the "Prix de Rome" in 1843, he travelled to Italy where he met with Garibaldi.
In 1849, he settled down in Antwerp where he first got appointed as a teacher (1891), later as a director of the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts (1895). He often resided in Paris to get inspired by the city life. He became a member of the Academic Corps; knight of the Order of Leopold.
