Louis VERBOECKHOVEN(Ghent1827 - Ghent1884)

Louis Verboeckhoven was born in Ghent, where his father had established himself in 1815 and became as an apprentice to both his father Charles-Louis and his uncle Eugène. His father and uncle foresaw their art to take a very active part in the revolution of 1830, which saw Belgium arise as an independent kingdom. His father specialised in marine painting, a manner that was to become a family trait. Louis also followed his family tradition by producing a large number of marine paintings. He widened his style to encompass landscapes, still-lifes and flowers. He undertook many travels around Europe. His paintings have a very academic and studied quality and are characterized by sensitive colouring and a luminescence which is also found in his father's work.
